Film posters and trailers

 Poster key convention:

In the film poster '12 years a slave,' it would have the central image, name of the movie, the director, the actors, the institution, release date and the star ratings.

The central image is of Chiwetel Ejiofor who plays Solomon North up. The editing of having a fade on his trousers look like grass; therefore this will make the audience want to see this because it shows that he's free or that he's escaping.
The title ' 12 years a slave' tells the audience the narrative of the movie by using a statistic and 3 words. Also we can see that the number 12 is in orange, perhaps to show freedom/ escapism.Additionally, the specific font used for the number could emphasise how long it has been.
The release date will always be at the bottom of the poster in bold. I can also see that the number '30' is in orange just like the number '12' in the title, this could symbolise that the numbers are very important.
The critics views would be found under the star ratings at the top of the page. They said "... A moment of such humanity and grace that at every moment you feel you're seeing something essential."
The ratings of the movie was 5 gold stars, this will make the audience watch this because it has been rated 5 out of 5, which must mean it is a good movie.

Film Institutions

12 years a slave

My chosen movie:

1) I've chosen 12 years a slave.

2) The reason why I chose this film is because Steve McQueen, who is the first black movie director who won an Oscar. On top of that, it is based on a true story of Solomon North up.

Institutional background:

1) The production company is Regency Enterprises, River Road Entertainment, Plan B Entertainment and many more.

2) It was distributed by Fox searchlight pictures and Entertainment one.

No brand loyalty:

1) The genre of 12 years a slave is historical drama.

2) I know that the genre is historical drama. This is because black people getting whipped and the discrimination against the blacks.

3b) No. Brad Pitt, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Lupita Nyong'o ect

It's all a matter of timing:

1) It was released January 10th 2014.

2) 16th of July 2013:

It's a social thing:

1) The movie '12 years a slave' got a lot of good review about how emotional and infuriating it was. Also a few mentioned how there were unfamiliar faces in the movie a part from Brad Pitt, which was good because they got to feel true emotions.

2) Quote: "Lupita Nyong'o is the emotional epic enter of the entire film."
Quote: "Chiwertel Ejiofo executes every emotion flawlessly."

Risky Business:

1) The original budget of 12 years a slave is roughly $20,000,000.

2)  The film made $923,715 on the first opened weekend.

3) The total amount the money made was $56,667,870.

Star in the eyes:

1) Steve McQueen has also directed a movie called 'Shame' in 2011, the genre is drama only. Another film called 'Hunger' in 2008 however, it is a biography and drama similar to 12 years a slave apart from the historical bit.

2) The main character is Chiwertel Ejiofo who started in 12 years a slave.

3) He also stared in quiet a few other movies such as; Inside, Love actually, SALT, Melinda and Melinda and 2012. However, these movies are not the same genre as 12 years a slave, in fact majority of them are action and a bit of romance.

4) Yes the director and actors/actresses are mentioned at the end of the trailer as well as the end of the movie.

Minority Report shot-by-shot analysis

shot 1

This medium close up shot shows the audience that there are a lot of people on the hunt for Tom Cruise's character. This could suggest that they want him quite desperately and it's almost an emergency which make the whole atmosphere quite serious and tense. It also gives us a chance to see the characters' emotions, which is desperate and serious.

Shot 2

This establishing shot with Tom Cruise's character in the corner shows that the local area is quite derelict and abandoned. Also, it seems that Tom Cruise's character knows this area well so this could imply that he's had to hide there before when being chased. This could lead to further interpretation that maybe he's been sleeping rough ever since he's been a fugitive. Also, since he seems to have a clear strategy in his head, this could show that he's very experienced in running and hiding whilst in pursuit. This could elude to the fact that this is not the first time he's been chased by the authorities which could then lead the audience to think 'when has this happened before and why?' They then want to continue watching. The size of the car in this shot in comparison to Tom Cruise's character could show that he feels everything is a lot bigger than him and he feels very small being on his own, even though he seems to know what he's doing.

Shot 3
This close up shot of Tom Cruise's character's face shows his full emotions. In this shot he looks tired and a bit irritated, and it's possible he's looking at someone else which could elude to the fact that he's thinking of giving up running away because he has a certain look in his eye which could suggest sadness or despair/panic. He also has his mouth slightly open which could mean that he's about to speak or he's breathing heavily, as a result of being out of breath or scared.

media analysis

Language
The advert shows one particular footballer celebrating with thousands of people behind him looking at him. The slogan ‘’every goal matters’’ suggests that football is a sport where everything is serious and by missing a game or goal means you've missed out of something big. The conventions of this advert are the Barclay's premier league logo so the viewer knows it’s a football advertisement. Another convention is the Sky Sports logo which shows Sky is advertising sports channels. The Sky logo being a recognisable brand which means when they advertise it’s a recognisable advert and millions of people would have seen it. The slogan ‘’believe in better’’ makes people think everything sky do will get better and better.

Institution
Sports is a group of sports television channels operated by the satellite pay-tv company British Sky Broadcasting. Sky Sports is a commodity which is something bought and sold. A monthly subscription fee is paid. Barclay’s premier league is a well-known brand for football. Rupert Murdoch is the founder of Sky.

Audience
The target audience for this advertisement is dominantly football fans. This would be mainly for male viewers but also female viewers with an 80:20 split. The minimum age would be 25 to 60 as this is a monthly subscription, and subscribers with a good wage packet would be paying for this rather than a student who is studying. This would make Sky Sports target middle classed people.

Representation
The representation on the advert is mainly white male footballers. This suggests that mainly white players are in the Premier League or even more white footballers around the world. This may have been done due to the fact that more Europeans watch football than the Asian community as stereotypes suggest the Asian community are more into cricket. Even though women’s football in growing it’s surprising how Sky Sports haven’t got a women to represent their brand. This may also be due to the fact that there isn’t enough coverage of women’s sports on TV.

TV news research

11) What were the five stories your group chose to broadcast?
·         Greenford news story: Year 11 End Of Year Video
·         National news story: Mobile Phone Operators Could Share Networks
·         London news story: Met Police Delete Records On Sex and Race Discrimination
·         Sports news story: Barcelona start Discussions with Liverpool for Striker Luis Suarez
·         Funny news story: Bear gets Head Stuck In A Cookie Jar

2) For each story above, explain WHY you chose that particular story and not something else. Why would it interest a Greenford audience?
·         Greenford news story: We chose this story because It's a thing that most Greenford Student's would love to see. It's funny, it contains people they know and people that they have heard of in the school Community.
·         National news story: We chose this story because students in our school are at the age of using their phones the most than any other age group, so this would interest them as this might concern them.
·         London news story: We chose this story because we wanted to give the students of GHS another story of discrimination in London. We wanted to tell them that this happens to any age group and it is a form of bullying. We wanted to tell this story so that it raises awareness in school of what the effects of bullying are. This woman went to the police students will go to child protection officers in the school.
·         Sports news story: We chose this story because Football is probably the biggest range of sport discussed in and out of school. The world cup is at this moment so this would be a great time to tell this story as they will be interested. The Luis Suarez bite is big because no Football player has ever done that and no one his age has probably never done that either. So this player is really famous and recognizable so people would want information about him.
·         Funny news story: We chose this story because people in the GHS community are likely to find this funny as it is a thing that they are unlikely to hear something like this story. It also gives a lighter side to our news which people would want to see our broadcast again because it is something that they would want to hear or closer to this because people find animals really funny or like them.

3) What order did you broadcast the stories in? Why did you place the stories in that order?
·         1) Mobile Phone Operators Share Networks
·         2) The Met Delete Records of Sex and Race Discrimination
·         3) Barcelona start discussions with Liverpool to bid for Luis Suarez
·         4) Yr 11 End Of Year Video
·         5) Bear's Head Get Stuck In A Cookie Jar

4) How did you make sure the script was the right length?
·         Made an even number of words in each story and timed a draft to make sure it was what length we needed. We didn't want them to get a lot of speaking because that would just bore them and there would not be enough time to bombard them with this information.

5) How did you make sure each story was clear and easy to understand?
·         We made the script clear by making the language suitable for our target age group e.g. not using words they wouldn't understand, not using words that sound babyish. We gave listeners enough time to understand what they were being told be slowing down and making very short pauses.

6) How did you make sure the broadcast was professional?
·         Made the script sound professional and used certain types of news story's and giving information in certain way. We also used our script by using some professional words to give it a bit of seriousness so our broadcasts show reality which gives some professionalism.

7) What was your specific role in the group?
·         The editor

8) Rate your group’s ability to work collaboratively out of 5 (1=poor, 5=excellent)
·         5

9) How could your group have worked more effectively as a team?
·         We could use less time in some parts to work more on the script or also we could have chosen news reports that were more appealing to our targeted age group.

10) Finally, what would you have done differently if you were given the opportunity to do this again?
·         I would have taken less time in choosing the stories and also presenting the news story's a better to the listeners.
